Screen free

In chapter five of The Tech-Wise Family, Andy Crouch offers one of ten tech wise family commitments: “We aim for ‘no screens before double digits' (age 10) at school and at home.”

Crouch goes on to explain how we are made to “live and learn in a physical world” and the need for difficulty and resistance to “press our brains and bodies to adapt and learn.” He counters the oft given justification for early year’s screen time that children need to become "computer literate,” stating unless they're learning how to computer program, there really is not much for students to learn with technology that they cannot learn intuitively. How many four year olds with no formal technology instruction navigate an ipad as well (or better) than an adult?

Like many classical schools nationwide, Heritage Classical Academy offers little to no technology instruction or practice. Instead, we “develop children’s minds and hearts with a deep connection to their bodies and the world around them” by choosing “the more excellent way-glowing-rectangle free.” Parents, we encourage you to do the same.
